Cities with most car accidents ranked in new report

Though Georgia sees a fair share of car accidents every year, none of its cities made the top 10 list that has been compiled by Go Safe Labs, a San Francisco-based nonprofit. Researchers ranked not only the 10 cities with the most car accidents in 2019 but also the 10 most accident-prone regions. The results may be surprising.

The report looked at 2 million crashes arising in 2018 and 2019. Nationwide, auto accident numbers rose 6.8% from 892,615 in 2018 to 953,630 in 2019. Of those accidents in 2019, 22,188 occurred in Houston, putting it at number one on the list. It was followed by Charlotte with 21,818 accidents, Los Angeles with 19,660 and Austin with 16,635. The top 10 ended with Phoenix at 9,876 accidents.

One interesting detail was that some of the cities with the highest accident numbers actually experienced a decline in 2019. Raleigh, for example, came in sixth with 12,846 crashes in spite of a 25.5% decrease in accidents when compared to the previous year.

Among the 10 most accident-prone "hotspots" were intersections, stretches of highway and highway exits. Number one was the Pelham Road Exit on Interstate 85 in Greenville, South Carolina. That state actually had three other entries in the list: two regions in Greenville and an intersection in Columbia. New York City had three noted regions on the top 10 list.

It is not as clear why these regions are so prone to car accidents. Drivers can be negligent anywhere, though, whether they start using their phones or become drowsy. Fortunately, there are laws in place that give the victims of a crash the right to seek compensation. Victims may want an attorney to explain these laws and see if their case holds up. If it does, the attorney may assist with the filing process and, perhaps most importantly, with negotiations.
