Hidden injuries to look out for after a car accident

A recent ranking of fatal car crashes in every state showed Georgia has far many more than most drivers likely realize. The state ranked 14th in the country for total number of fatal car accidents with other nearby southern states also ranking high on the list.

A majority of auto accidents that occur in Georgia result in injuries rather than fatalities. However, you still need to pay attention to your body following a collision because some injuries can be disastrous if left unattended for too long. This is a problem because many common injuries you can sustain in a car accident may not be apparent until weeks after the incident.

Unexplained numbness

It is typical for tingling and numbness to be present in tissue and nerves following a car crash. This numbness is more likely to be present in the shoulder, back and neck. You may not necessarily feel pain in the area, but you cannot feel anything at all. This may be a sign you have a pinched nerve, which requires medical attention immediately.

Abdominal pain

You also do not want to ignore any stomach pain you feel after a car crash. It may seem minor at first, but that pain could be indicative of internal bleeding. It could also mean you have damage to one of your internal organs. Either one requires medical treatment, and you should ideally visit a hospital directly after the crash.

Herniated discs

Whiplash is common after car accidents. This whiplash can result in one of the discs in your spine rupturing or moving out of place. Doctors refer to this as a herniated disc. It can inflame nerves along the spine, and you may need to seek out ongoing treatments from a chiropractor or physical therapist to feel better. These ongoing treatments need to go into consideration when you aim to seek compensation from the accident.
