Georgia motorists might want to be concerned about a recent report from the National Governors Association. The report maintains that roadways in the United States are less safe than in years past and that the rate of improvements is poor compared to other developed nations. The nonpartisan agency is often used as a vehicle for policy makers to share ideas across state lines on a widespread range of issues.
During 2016, traffic fatalities within the United States were up 5.6 percent from 2015 with 37,461 people dying in automobile crashes nationwide. There were 4.6 million accident-related injuries reported during 2016, which is also an increase from the prior year. The Governors Highway Safety Association recommends targeted speed enforcement and modification to existing laws that prohibit patrol officers in some states from stopping drivers solely because of observed seat belt violations. Additional safety measures recommended by the report include taking a fresh look at speed limits, particularly in areas heavy with bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
The report focuses on a combination of infrastructure enhancements and enforcement strategies that the group claims will make roadways safer for motorists and pedestrians. Among other measures, the report recommends increased implementation of automated speed control technology to ticket speeders without the presence of a patrol officer. Other recommended enforcement strategies include broader use of sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols during known high-risk windows for impaired driving. Policy makers concede that the hope is to curtail growth and perhaps create an overall reduction in car accidents and traffic-related deaths.
